Grey's Anatomy Renewed For Season 18 With Ellen Pompeo Signing New Deal

Grey's Anatomy has been renewed for season 18, with star Ellen Pompeo signing a one-year extension to continue playing Meredith Grey. For nearly two decades, the wildly popular ABC hospital drama has been one of the most-watched shows on television, and its illustrious run is far from over. Grey's Anatomy season 17 is currently airing, with the season finale set to air on June 3.

Grey's Anatomy, created by Shonda Rhimes, premiered in 2005 with an ensemble cast led by Ellen Pompeo, Patrick Dempsey, Chandra Wilson, and Sandra Oh. Since then, the series has gained and lost a slew of characters, including Dempsey's beloved Dr. Derek Shepherd and Oh's Dr. Cristina Yang. It was recently announced that longtime star Jesse Williams, who first appeared as Dr. Jackson Avery in Grey's Anatomy season 6, will be the next to depart after season 17.

Throughout all of the cast changes, Pompeo has remained in the lead role of Meredith Grey, and she will be returning for at least one more season. Grey's Anatomy has been officially renewed for a season 18 at ABC, according to TVLine, following Pompeo's contract renewal. Station 19, Grey's spinoff series, has also been renewed for a fifth season on the network, and both will continue to be led by showrunner Krista Vernoff. According to recent ratings, the two shows continue to be ABC's most-watched scripted series.

While the extension will undoubtedly be welcomed by many Grey's Anatomy fans, it does not guarantee the show's long-term future. Pompeo's new contract apparently does not guarantee more than one more season, so the series could still end at the end of season 18. Pompeo has previously discussed the possibility of season 17 being the final season of Grey's Anatomy, so the idea of wrapping up Grey's in the near future is almost certainly still on the table.

Regardless of how long Grey's Anatomy is on the air, it has already established itself as one of the most successful shows in modern television history. The series catapulted Shonda Rhimes to Hollywood superstardom, launched the careers of many beloved performers, and amassed a massive fan base that has stuck with the show through numerous changes. Whatever Grey's Anatomy's future holds, it will be powered by the years of stories and fan support it has received in the past.
