Top 10 most popular cattle breeds in the United States

It can be difficult to distinguish between the more than 70 cattle breeds recognized in the United States. However, only a few cattle breeds (less than 20) account for the majority of genetics used in commercial beef production in the United States.

According to the United States Cattlemen's Beef Board, the five most common beef cattle breeds in the United States, as well as five others, are listed below.

Black Angus

With over 330,000 registered animals, Black Angus is the most common beef cattle breed in the United States. The breed's carcass characteristics, which are advertised as producing well-marbled, juicy beef, are one of the reasons for its popularity. Angus cattle are also low-maintenance during the calving season, good mothers, and feed effective. The Black Angus cattle breed arrived in the United States in the nineteenth century and quickly established itself in Kansas.

Charolais

No other breed is said to have had such a major influence on the beef industry in North America as the Charolais. The Charolais became popular in the United States cattle industry at a period when farmers were looking for cattle with a larger frame and more weight than standard British cattle breeds. Charolais have a white or creamy white coat, which is short in the summer but thickens and lengthens in the winter.

Hereford

Herefords, which originated in England, became very common in the United States due to their early maturity and fattening potential. Herefords are known for their longevity and for being docile, quick calvers, good milkers, and good mothers. They are dark red to red yellow in color with a white face.

Simmental

The Simmental is one of the world's oldest and most widely spread cattle breeds. The red and white animals were first introduced to the United States in the late 1800s, and they have had a positive influence on the beef industry ever since. They have a wide body frame, but they need little assistance during calving season and can gain a lot of weight.

Red Angus

Red Angus, while not as common as Black Angus, has the same useful carcass characteristics as Black Angus, such as increased marbling and flavor. Red Angus cattle are also docile and have excellent mothering qualities. They tolerate hotter temperatures better than black Angus.

Texas Longhorn

The Texas Longhorn is the product of the "survival of the fittest" principle. The cattle breed, which was brought to America by Christopher Columbus and Spanish colonists, is known for its long horns, which can reach over 1.8 meters tip to tip for bulls and 2.1 meters tip to tip for steers and exceptional cows. Longhorns in Texas are known for their colorful coats, which can be any color or combination of colors, but dark red and white are the most common.

Gelbvieh

The Gelbvieh is a horned European breed that was introduced to the United States by artificial insemination. It is red in colour, has dark skin pigmentation, and is horned. Polled cattle originated in the United States, where naturally hornless base females were used. The breed's supporters believe that it has superior fertility, calving ease, mothering capacity, and calves' growth rate.

Holstein

Though black and white cattle are the most common dairy breeds, Holsteins that aren't used for breeding or milk production are raised for their meat value. Beef from finished Holstein finished steers has a lot of good qualities and is consistently good. The consistency of the quality of beef produced by Holsteins is primarily due to genetic similarity.

Limousin

The golden-red breed is native to the Limousin and Marche regions of France's south central region. The Limousin breed has spread throughout North America from its origins in Oklahoma, Texas, and South Dakota in the United States. There are actually over a million people registered here. The breed's excellent carcass characteristics have drew the attention of the entire beef industry.

Highlands

Highlands need nothing in the way of shelter, feed supplements, or costly grains to achieve and sustain good condition and fitness, thanks to their long horns and double coats. They are unaffected by cold weather or snow. They've come from as far north as Alaska and the Scandinavian countries to raise their children. They also adapt well to warmer temperatures, with herds flourishing as far south as Texas and Georgia. Pinkeye and cancer eyes are rare because of their long lashes and forelocks, which protect their eyes from flying insects. Highland beef is lean, well marbled, and juicy, with little waist fat on the outside.
