Simple Ways to Entertain Your Family
The best things in life, they say, are free.
It doesn't seem so when your family spends $100 on dinner and a movie night. Many families opt for indoor entertainment at this time of year, which may be more costly than outdoor activities.
When it comes to the family budget, regardless of the financial position, deliberate spending and learning to manage wants and needs are critical.
Here are a few quick ways to spend time with your family without investing a lot of money:
Hiking
Even in the dead of winter, there are some fantastic trails and parks that are well worth the effort of bundled up! Water, basic snacks, and good shoes are pretty much the only necessities, aside from a national or state park fee. Hiking with other families or friends is a fun way to get some exercise, make new friends, and learn about the local wildlife. Visiting the same trails at various times of year helps you to see how habitats evolve and change. Letterboxing and geocaching add to the excitement of your walk.
Childcare Swap
Instead of hiring a babysitter or sitting at home all day, trade childcare with another family. Taking your children to someone else's house for the afternoon or evening will give them the opportunity to socialize and play with new toys while still encouraging them to get some exercise. Make it a memorable day by preparing a craft or special activity when it's your turn to host.
Potlucks
Going out to eat can be expensive, particularly if you try to stay away from the generally unhealthy children's menu. Cooking at home is one of the most cost-effective ways to save money. Organize a potluck or a night of co-cooking. Prepare a couple of dishes (even a pizza and salad) and make the other family add some of the ingredients. Adults will spend time in the kitchen slicing or rolling dough while the children play. Allow the kids to set the table or assist in the kitchen, and you'll enjoy the freshness, teamwork, and cost savings when it's time to eat.
Movie Night
Movies can be seen for as little as a dollar on Netflix, Redbox, Amazon, Hulu, and other services. Alternatively, don't be afraid to bring out the movies you own but haven't seen in a while. Make it a routine, and have family members take turns picking what you watch. Turn off the lights and spread blankets and pillows on the floor. Your kids will look forward to this tradition, and you will be much more relaxed, maybe enough to watch two movies.
Family Game Night
Stacks of games are crammed into drawers and closets by all of us. Plan to pull them out once a week or a couple of times a month. Put on some music, stock up on snacks, and gather around the kitchen table. You'll find yourself smiling, sharing stories, and resurrecting some long-forgotten games.
