How Do You Get Good Fishing Luck?
So, how do you get good fishing luck? There are numerous superstitions and beliefs that fishermen adhere to in order to increase their good fortune. We'll look at some of the most common myths below.
Stop paying attention to what you're saying.
In our (and many others') experience, the number one way to get a bite is to stop paying attention to your setup. We can't count the number of times a fish bites our lure as soon as we look away or become distracted. Something about not paying attention entices fish to bite. It is also a good idea to take your mind off of it so that time passes more quickly.
Substitute a dollar bill for your line.
Placing a dollar bill under your line and reeling in a few turns is another common way to increase your luck when trolling for large fish. This means that if a fish pulls out any of your lines, you'll lose your dollar. Something about the prospect of you losing money entices fish to bite...
Allow the novice to go first.
When it comes to fishing, beginner's luck appears to be especially effective. We can't count the number of times the person with the least experience in the boat catches the biggest fish and has the most luck. Allow them to take the rod first and fight the first fish you hook.
Don't get too far ahead of yourself.
Prepare everything for when you hook a fish, but don't jinx it. There will be no wearing of the fighting belt until someone has caught a fish. Don't start looking up recipes for what you want to catch until you've caught it. Be ready, but don't count your eggs until they hatch.
Pay homage to the fish gods.
Many guides believe that every time you go fishing, you should pay your respects to the fish gods by literally throwing money into the water. While we appreciate the idea of honoring Mother Nature and the fish gods, we do not support the practice of throwing money into the water. This is considered littering and is not a wise decision (and illegal in the United States).
Allow the first fish you catch to go free.
Some fishermen swear by releasing the first fish they catch of the season, regardless of size or species. This improves their standing with the fish and enables them to catch more as the season progresses.
Bring a pineapple with you.
Bringing a pineapple on board is a common method of increasing your fishing luck that many islanders believe works. Pineapples are thought to have the opposite effect as bananas, which will be discussed further below.
Why don't you bring a banana to go banana fishing?
You've probably heard of it. The most common cause of bad luck when fishing is bringing a banana on board the boat. This superstition dates back to the 1700s, when it was first identified as a forerunner of bad luck.
There are numerous explanations for why fishermen believe bananas bring bad luck. Here are the most logical explanations.
Bananas brought along unwelcome stowaways. Large spiders and other venomous creatures live in large banana clusters. Fishermen used to get bitten or injured by these creatures and blamed it on the bananas.
Banana peels are poisonous. If you step on banana peels, you will almost certainly slip. Slipping on a boat can be extremely dangerous, if not fatal in extreme circumstances.
Bananas cause the spoilage of other fruits. Bananas produce ethylene gas, which causes the fruit to ripen faster than it would under normal conditions. Fishermen may have noticed that when bananas were in the area, their food spoiled faster than usual.
Why is renaming a boat considered unlucky?
Most fishermen believe that renaming a boat brings bad luck. A boat that has been named will always be known by that name.
Renaming a boat is also considered unlucky because it may be used to conceal any flaws associated with the previous boat name. When fishermen went to sell a boat, if it had been damaged, they might change the name so that others didn't recognize it as the same boat. They could then resell it for a higher price.
Is it a bad omen to sail in a green boat?
Many fishermen believe that painting a boat green is bad luck. Because green is associated with land, many fishermen assumed that a green boat would eventually run aground or sink. If you're on board, this isn't good!
Is Whistling on a Ship Unlucky?
Whistling while on a boat is also considered unlucky by some fishermen and should be avoided at all costs. This is due to the fact that whistling is considered disrespectful to the wind. Wind was either a sailor's best friend or his worst enemy. You didn't want to enrage the wind!
Is fishing a skill that must be mastered?
Fishing requires a certain level of skill. Knowing when the fish like to bite, where they feed, and what types of lures they prefer will all help you catch them. Learning how to imitate their natural bait will be beneficial as well. Fly fishing is the most obvious example of this (like for steelhead, Louisiana redfish, or tarpon).
Fly fishing is a highly technical sport that requires years of practice to master. Even if you were the luckiest person on the planet, if you don't know how to cast your fly correctly or what type of fly to use, you'll never catch a fish.
This isn't just true for fly fishing; there are many other fishing techniques that require a great deal of skill and planning to pull off. Other examples include kayak redfish fishing, snook fishing at night, and much more.
In conclusion
A successful fishing trip is almost always the result of a combination of good fishing luck and extensive planning. We recommend that you first focus on improving your fishing technique, and then try some of the other luck-boosting techniques we listed.
