5 Things Your Cat Loves

Cats may have a long list of likes (and, maybe, an equally long list of dislikes!) because they are intelligent, sentient beings. Most of the time, your cat enjoys the same things you do, such as fresh, tasty food, long naps in comfortable spots, and a variety of enjoyable activities, to name a few.

Cats, like humans, change their minds about what they find interesting, fun, or exciting as they get older—your cat can love her feathered toy one day and find it boring the next. It's your duty as a kitty parent to notice when your cat's priorities shift so you can keep her comfortable, safe, and engaged. While cat tastes vary, these eight kitty "likes" are a good place to start.

Cats Love Taking Naps

Cats are known for their love of sleeping. In reality, the average kitty sleeps for 12 to 16 hours a day on average! Cats are nocturnal animals, so they sleep for the majority of the day—and who can blame them? Everyone enjoys a long, relaxing nap in a warm, inviting setting.

Keep in mind that kittens and senior cats can sleep more than an adolescent cat, for example. However, if you're concerned that your cat is sleeping too much—or too little—consult your veterinarian about what's natural for his breed, age, activity level, and size.

Cats Love Grooming and Being Groomed

Did you know that adult cats clean themselves for about half of their waking hours? Grooming is clearly an important part of a cat's life!

There are many reasons why cats spend so much time grooming:

  1. It helps to keep them clean. Grooming not only removes dirt and grime from cats' fur, but it also helps predators and prey avoid identifying them. How do you do it? Some odors that have been absorbed by their skins are removed by licking them.

  2. It keeps their skin and coat in good condition. Grooming distributes the oils created naturally by a cat's skin and fur, keeping her coat safe, lustrous, and hydrated.

  3. It has a calming effect on them. Isn't there anything more soothing than a massage? Cats, on the other hand, are in the same boat! Instead of going to a masseuse, they groom themselves to relieve tension and relax.

  4. It aids their socialization with other cats. To build and reinforce their bond, cats groom each other—and their humans! Cats grooming each other in hard-to-reach places are common.

  5. It relaxes them. Humans perspire. Dogs have a tendency to pant. Cats lick their own fur. When it's really hot outside, cats wet their fur with saliva to keep cool.

If your cat enjoys being groomed by his humans, try brushing his coat with a natural bristle or rubber brush. It will clean his fur and remove any residue.

Cats Love Fresh, Nutritious Food

At dinnertime, it's doubtful that you'd want to dig into a large plate of rotten food. Your cat is in the same boat. Stale and rotting food isn't only unpleasant to eat; it can also harbor bacteria such as Salmonella and Staphylococcus.

Check the expiration dates of both wet and dry food whenever you serve your kitty's meals. You'll be able to feed her only organic, healthy, and safe foods this way.

Cats Love Running Water

If you own a cat, you're well aware that they will try to drink water from running faucets whenever the chance occurs. Fortunately, there are several drinking fountains built specifically for cats, ensuring that they still have access to cool, new, flowing water.

Some cat types, believe it or not, enjoy playing in the water. Fill the bathtub or a kiddie pool with a few inches of water during your cat's playtime if she enjoys splashing around. On very hot days, this activity will allow her to get some exercise and cool down.

Cats Love Scratching and Clawing

Cats have a natural instinct to sharpen their claws by scratching and clawing a number of surfaces. They, too, get a lot of enjoyment out of it.

Scratching can help cats relax and rejuvenate in addition to sharpening their claws. When your muscles are exhausted or achy, think of it as the human equivalent of a short, long stretch. A fast scratch on a cat tree or scratching post will instantly wake up a sleepy kitty.
