Robin Padilla declares DLSU was established by the Spanish, but facts prove him wrong

According to Robin Padilla, De La Salle University was founded during the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines “for insulares, peninsulares, and mestizos.” He was called out for this by a history group that warned the public about misleading information.

The action star made the statement in defense of Sen. Bong Go, who had previously claimed that Lapulapu was Tausug, another claim that drew criticism from netizens. Padilla attempted to slam a netizen who called him out to make false claims about the Filipino chieftain. He accomplished this by questioning the netizen's educational background.

“You've got to be kidding me. Are you a student at Ateneo? What about De La Salle? What is UST? All Spanish-speaking countries established schools for insulares, peninsulares, and mestizos. You don't have to be a doctor to accept reality,” Padilla said on his Facebook page yesterday, May 2.

This prompted the history advocacy group High School Philippine History Movement to correct the actor's statement, clarifying that DLSU was not founded by Spaniards.

“Ang De La Salle University (DLSU-Manila) ay itinatag noong June 16, 1911 noong panahon ng mga Amerikano,” the university said in a Facebook post yesterday. (During the American occupation, De La Salle University was founded on June 16, 1911.)

According to the group, the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, also known as the Lasallian Brothers, founded the university.

“Hindi po itinatag ng panahon ng Espanyol at ng mga Kastilang prayle. These are historical facts that cannot be refuted. “Walang personalan,” it continued. (It was not founded by Spanish friars or during the Spanish colonial era. These are historical facts that cannot be refuted. Please don't take this personally.)
