1. In 250 B.C., India established the first nursing school.
During this period, only men were permitted to attend school because they were thought to be more "pure" than women. In terms of statistics, women now virtually dominate the field. According to data from the United States Department of Health and Human Services in 2009, approximately 5.8 percent of nurses in the United States were male. Nursing did not become a systematized practice until the 1800s.
2. The New England Hospital for Women and Children, which opened in 1862, was the country's first nursing school.
Florence Nightingale and 38 volunteer nurses were sent to a British camp in Turkey during the Crimean War, where they started to practice what is now known as modern nursing. Prior to 1862, women were barred from working in hospitals and attending medical school. Women could finally obtain clinical training when the New England Hospital for Women and Children opened in Boston in 1862. The school educated the first women-trained nurses in America in 1873. Nursing was named the most trusted profession in the annual Gallup Poll for the 14th year in a row. Nurses are regarded as having high ethical and honest standards by 85 percent of those polled.

According to a MEDSURG Nursing study titled "How Far Do Nurses Walk?" 146 nurses walked an average of 4-5 miles during their 12-hour shift. In comparison, the average American walks only 2.5-3 miles per day. It's no surprise that nurses get those steps in when they're on their feet for 12 hours straight!
6. In the United States, there are currently over 2.9 million nurses.
According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the RN workforce is projected to expand to 3.2 million by 2022, indicating that nursing has a bright future. Why is there such a strong demand for nurses? People are living longer while becoming sicker, necessitating the need for more nursing care. In addition, there are hundreds of different types of nurses required for various conditions and illnesses. While there is enough room for more nurses in the world, this does not mean that the market is uncompetitive. Employers and hospitals are usually very selective about how they recruit new graduates due to the essence of the work. Nursing is a difficult profession!
7. General nursing practices are used everywhere in the world.
