Queen Elizabeth Left a Sentimental Handwritten Letter for Prince Philip on His Coffin
Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip were in a long-term relationship.
It was an emotional day for the 94-year-old Queen of the United Kingdom, as she laid to rest her beloved husband of 73 years and said her final farewell in a touching letter. On Saturday, the Duke of Edinburgh's funeral was held at Windsor Castle's St. George's Chapel.
A wreath and a handwritten letter from the queen were visible on top of Philip's coffin. The queen's stationery and a personal message were included in the sentimental gesture. The couple, who married in 1947, famously wrote love letters to each other throughout their marriage. Their romance began when Elizabeth was 13 years old and lasted until Phil died.
During Philip's service, the queen sat alone in the St. George Chapel pews, where she was frequently seen with her husband by her side.
The royal family gathered to say their final farewells. The service was attended by Prince Charles, his grandchildren Prince William and Prince Harry, Kate Middleton, Camila, Duchess of Cornwall, and many others. Philip died on April 9, 2019, at the age of 99, leaving four children, eight grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren behind.
The service was small, with only 30 people in attendance. Philip had a hand in making his own funeral arrangements prior to his death, opting for a smaller gathering rather than the state funeral to which he was entitled as the queen's consort.
"He has asked, in his words, for a simple affair," Omid Scobie, co-author of Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of a Modern Royal Family, told ET.
Philip's coffin was carried in a custom Land Rover designed by The Duke for the televised funeral. Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, Prince Edward, Harry, and William, among others, walked behind his coffin in the procession.
