6 Ways to Spend the Day with Grandma

Grandparents Day is celebrated in early September. If your children don't usually get to spend time with their grandparents, now is the time. Don't waste another second. Make a date out of these ways to spend time with Grandma (and Grandpa).

Continue a family tradition.

Request that Grandma share a memory from her childhood with your children. Sharing a game, recipe, or book with the next generation rekindles Grandma's memories while also creating new ones for your children today.

Improve your understanding of one another.

In a journal, have the kids and Grandma make a list of questions they don't know about each other. Take turns asking questions and writing down Grandma's responses in the journal. Then, ask each person to share a memory from a similar period in their lives (ie: kindergarten, first day of middle school, 16th birthday, etc.).

Shake things up in your family tree.

Inquire of Grandma about the names of her parents, grandparents, and siblings. You might come across family names that have been passed down through generations. Find out where your family is from and when they arrived in this part of the country. Ask Grandma to teach you a few words in another language if she speaks it. Is there any traditional clothing or music in your family that has been stored in the attic? Take them out and tell them their story.

Photographs of your family.

Allow Grandma to be your tour guide down memory lane. Make some popcorn and put on some family movies. Remove the photo albums from the back of the closet. Your children will enjoy seeing the house you grew up in as well as your childhood pets. Allow them to make fun of your outlandish outfits and hairstyles of the day. Don't forget to bring out each child's baby pictures and show them how much they've changed in just a few years.

Bring Grandma into the twenty-first century.

It's your turn now, Kids. Bring Grandma a Tiger Beat magazine and gush about One Direction with her. Introduce her to Instagram and assist her in setting up an account. Show her how to play Wii games like Just Dance or Xbox games like Minecraft. Explain the meaning of emojis and send her a few via text.

Take amusing photos.

Finish the day on a positive note. Make a backdrop out of a sheet and decorative lights. Print out photo booth prop templates such as eyeglasses, hats, and mustaches, or use items from a dress-up clothes box. Photograph Grandma and the kids being silly. Keep the memories alive by framing the photos and displaying them in a special place in your home, or create a photo book online and order two copies (one for Grandma and one for the kids).
