20 Weird Dog & Cat Facts to Inspire Your Veterinary Assistant Career

If you've ever considered a career as a veterinary assistant, chances are you enjoy working with animals. However, it appears that the eternal debate is whether cats or dogs are superior. We're not sure either, but we've compiled a list of amusing, intriguing, and downright bizarre facts about cats and dogs that may tip the scales one way or the other! Cat and dog lovers, come together!

1. The nose is out!

A dog's nose print is one-of-a-kind! It is, in fact, comparable to human fingerprints and can be used to correctly identify our canine companions.

2. Identification based on the nose ridge

That's right, just like dogs' nose prints or human fingerprints, a cat's nose can be identified by its extremely distinct ridged pattern.

3. I am not colorblind.

It is a widely held misconception that dogs are colorblind! They can, in fact, see in color, albeit not as vividly as humans. In low-light conditions, their color vision is comparable to ours. To compensate, they actually have better low-light vision than we do!

4. Not so tasty

Cats are unable to detect sweet flavors. It is thought that a mutation in one of their taste receptors prevents our feline friends from enjoying sugary treats. It's no surprise that your dog, rather than your cat, is constantly attempting to steal your snuff.

5. Dr. Dog

Dogs can be specially trained to detect and alert their owners or guardians to a variety of health issues. They can detect blood sugar fluctuations in diabetic patients as well as the onset of a seizure in someone with epilepsy.

6. Into the sea

Did you know that cats can consume seawater? Unlike a human kidney, a cat's kidney can easily filter out salt and receive hydration from ocean water!

7. A million affluent canines

It is estimated that approximately one million dogs in the United States have been designated as the primary beneficiary in their owners' wills. Not to be outdone, the richest cat in the world is now worth $13 million after inheriting his owner's fortune. That is one wealthy cat!

8. Cat snoozes

Kittens, like human infants, sleep a lot because their rapidly developing bodies release certain hormones required for growth only during sleep. However, once they have finished growing, there is no longer a specific hormone released during sleep. Cats continue to sleep simply because they can. Actually, by the age of nine, a cat will have slept for roughly six of the years he or she has been alive.

9. His bark is more painful than his bite.

We certainly hope so! An average dog's bite exerts 150-200 pounds of pressure per square inch! In fact, the pressure in a larger dog's mouth can reach 450 pounds per square inch!

10. Cat conversationalists

How many of you cat owners spend time conversing with your feline companions? Those who do are more likely to have a cat that talks back than those who do not! Cats, on the other hand, can make over 100 different vocal sounds, far outnumbering the 10 that dogs can. If you believe that cats are the only animals that purr, you are mistaken! A cat's purr, which has roughly the same frequency as an idling diesel engine, is just one of many. Other animals, such as lemurs, elephants, squirrels, and gorillas, purr as well!

11. Man's oldest and best friend

Dogs are thought to have been kept as pets by humans for over 12,000 years! Despite the fact that they all descended from the same ancient creature, a Tomarctus, there are now over 700 different breeds of dogs. The Saluki is the oldest breed, the Irish Wolfhound is the largest, the Chihuahua is the smallest, and the St. Bernard is the heaviest. There is certainly no lack of variety!

12. Wise cats!

Cats have a reputation for being aloof and difficult to understand. Their brains, on the other hand, are much more similar to a human's than a dog's – about 90% similar! In fact, the areas of their brains that regulate emotion are nearly identical to ours. They also have nearly twice as many neurons as a dog and a much better long-term memory. If only we could keep them awake long enough to put all that intelligence to use!

13. America adores dogs!

The United States has the most dogs in the world, followed by France. In fact, one out of every three families in the United States owns a dog. Among the many breeds kept in the United States, the Labrador Retriever is the most popular – it's also the most popular in Canada and the United Kingdom!

14. Cats are the kings and queens of the world.

Despite the fact that there are many dog lovers in the United States, cats are the most popular pet in the country. In the United States, approximately 88 million cats and 74 million dogs are kept as pets by families.

15. Pets are members of the family.

If you have a pet, you probably consider them a member of your family, and you are not alone! In fact, roughly one-third of dog owners polled in the United States will call their own homes and leave messages on the answering machine for their dogs. That isn't all! Approximately 70% of pet owners sign their pets' names on cards, and more than half include their pets in family portraits.

16. Amazing feline physiques

Cats' brains are impressive, but their physical capabilities are equally so. When they want to manipulate a human, they can manipulate their meows to sound like a human infant. Have you ever had a cat get into or out of a small space? Because their clavicle bones are free-floating, they can squeeze through small spaces. Cats can move their ears independently and up to 180 degrees by using the more than 20 muscles that control their ears. Oh my goodness!

17. I'll make it!

There were dogs aboard the Titanic during its tragic sinking in April 1912! Three of the canine passengers, however, survived. The first was a Newfoundland, the second a Pomeranian, and the third a Pekingese.

18. Cats that run fast!

The fastest domestic cat ever recorded ran at around 30 mph. That's three miles per hour faster than Usain Bolt's world record of 27 miles per hour.

19. Celebrity belongs to the dogs.

Rin Tin Tin was the first Hollywood dog star. To ensure that everything was official, the directors had him sign all 22 of his movie contracts with a pawprint. Terry, a female Cairn Terrier, played Toto from The Wizard of Oz. Gidget is the famous Taco Bell dog, and Bingo is the dog on the side of the Cracker Jack box. Dogs are famous for more than just their acting abilities and pretty faces; in 1957, Laika, a stray dog from Moscow, became the first living being to attempt space travel aboard the Sputnik 2.

20. Calling all cat lovers!

Despite the fact that cats outnumber dogs as pets in the United States, only about 11% of people consider themselves cat people, and statistics show that many of those cat lovers are also introverted. Cat owners, on the other hand, are more willing to try new things, are perceived as more sensitive, and are more likely to have a graduate degree.
