10 Things You Should Say to Your Son-In-Law

Don't waste your time and energy criticizing because it never results in the desired change. Listen to H. Jackson Brown, Jr. instead. "Let the improvement and refinement of your OWN life keep you so busy that you have little time to criticize others," he said.

Are you determined not to be critical? If that's the case, here are ten things you SHOULD say to your son-in-law:

1. "Does SHE treat YOU fairly?"

This demonstrates to your son-in-law that you believe he is a good match for your daughter. And that you believe in him. I asked my son-in-law this question not long after my youngest daughter married. As I had predicted, the answer was "Yes!" My daughter laughed because his mother had asked her a similar question when he called: "Is he treating you right?"

2. "Wow, this is incredible!"

Recognize the good things he has done, such as house improvements, car repairs, or teaching the kids a new skill. Keep an eye out for anything your son-in-law has done. Make it a point to show your approval. Everyone enjoys being acknowledged when they have done something well. (Be sincere, because hollow praise is just that.)

3. "Never give up."

Encourage your son-in-efforts law's to improve. Don't get caught up in what he hasn't done yet. Rather, offer words of encouragement and trust that he will achieve his goals in due time. You'll be glad you weren't a hindrance to his progress. Instead, you will share his joy in knowing that you were there for him.

4." (insert the name of your daughter) has never seemed happier."

Credit should be given where credit is due. Recognizing your son-in-positive law's influence on your daughter will encourage that positive influence to continue. This will result in a healthier relationship, which will help your daughter's marriage succeed.

5. "Can you assist me with...?"

One of the best compliments you can pay is to seek advice. In areas where your son-in-law excels, seek his assistance or advice. Make sure you don't become a burden by doing too much. His wife and children may consume all of his spare time. An occasional request, on the other hand, demonstrates that you recognize his strengths and sends a positive message.

6. "Can you tell me about your plans?"

Because of YOU, the holidays should never be a source of anxiety. Before making holiday plans, check with your adult children to see what they have in mind. Consider how much time your son-in-law will want to spend with his parents and with his siblings and their families. Consider celebrating before or after the special occasion. The most important thing is communication, as well as a willingness to not always have your own way.

7. "Dinner is on us."

Dining out isn't always in the budget for young families. It's a real treat to give him a gift card to his favorite restaurant. Take care! You don't want to send the message, "I know you can't, so I'll provide." Your thoughtfulness will be appreciated as a birthday or anniversary present.

8. "Can I watch the kids so you can have a date night?"

Offer to watch the kids so your son-in-law can spend one-on-one time with his wife. This is a win-win situation for everyone. You get to spend quality time with your grandchildren while also doing a favor for the parents. Couples need time alone together on a regular basis, especially as their family grows. Demonstrate your support for the marriage relationship. Plan enjoyable activities for your grandchildren. Everyone will look forward to date night this way.

9. "Can we use Skype or FaceTime?"

Offer to Skype or FaceTime with your son-in-children law's if he lives in another city or state. Again, this is a win-win situation. You'll spend more time getting to know your grandchildren. Even though they live far away from family, Mom and Dad have some regular free time.

10. "I want to thank you for being such a wonderful father to my grandchildren."

Never forget that your grandchildren are the wonderful people they are thanks in part to your son-in-law. Allowing him to know how much you appreciate him will boost his self-esteem as a father and may inspire him to do even better.
