10 New Uses For Mugs That You’ll Absolutely Love

Do you have an overabundance of mismatched mugs in your kitchen cabinet that you never use? The majority of us have a "favorite mug" from which we are hesitant to drink.

It's time to repurpose those unused mugs and cups by upcycling, reinventing, and repurposing them in a variety of fresh and exciting ways.

So clear out the mug cabinet and let's get this party underway.

1. Upcycle your mug into a candle holders

The coffee cup candle holders are a fantastic idea. Not only do they look great in a decorative mug, but the high sides prevent any wax from dripping onto the floor.

Eating Bird Food has a great tutorial for making new candles out of rustic enamelware mugs - these will make great gifts, so give them a try!

2. Mugs are the perfect size for planting herbs

Have you ever dreamed of having your own herb garden?

If that's the case, old mugs are a great place to start. They're the ideal size and weight for keeping your plants upright.

Fill clean mugs halfway with potting soil, then add your herbs and set them on a sunny windowsill.

3. One of the best uses for mugs is as a soup bowl

Nothing beats a steaming bowl of nutritious soup on a chilly day.

Make it even cozier by serving it in a sturdy, builder's mug in front of the TV on the sofa - it's the definition of cosy!

4. Reuse your mug to make a deliciously easy treat

You know how sometimes you just want a cake but can't be bothered to make it?

If you identify with all of the above, mug cakes may be the answer to your prayers. They're very simple to make and only take a few minutes.

5. Upcycle your mug into a cold recovery kit

One of my favorite uses for mugs, particularly the big, builder's kind, is this!

Many of us get common colds during the winter months. Bring a 'cold recovery package' to a sick friend, which includes medications, sweet treats, and even a small card put in the mug to assist them in their return to full health.

6. Encourage generosity with a tip collector

Do you own a small cafe or restaurant, or do you work in a similar setting? If that's the case, why not leave a mug on the counter for customers to tip as they leave?

It's a far more relaxed way of motivating customers to express gratitude for excellent service, and it also looks good!

7. Reinvent your mugs by breaking & mosaicing

Are any of your mugs showing signs of wear and tear?

By transforming chipped tea and coffee cups into mosaic fragments and using them as mosaics, you can fully transform them.

8. Mugs make great measuring cups

Do you really need a set of measuring cups when you already have too many old mugs?

By labeling your mug at various points to distinguish different amounts, you can fit all those different measures into one. It takes up less room, is simple to store, and allows you to put those old mugs to good use.

9. Use your mugs as a conversation starter

This is a fantastic concept. Do you always find yourself seated across from your partner at breakfast, holding your phone?

A handwritten message on the front of your mug, such as "How are you today?" is a perfect way to remind us to talk over tea instead of gazing at our phones.

After all, nothing beats a good cup of coffee and a good chit chat, right?

10. Make a 'microwave platform'

There are two meals that need to be reheated, but there isn't enough room to place them? A mug could be just what you're looking for.

Place a microwave-safe mug next to your meal on the glass plate in the microwave, then place the other meal on top. Since the second dish is elevated, there is enough space for both of them, so no one would be starving while waiting for their meal - how convenient is that?
