Top 10 Advantages and Disadvantages of Working from Home

Let's face it, no matter where you work, you're still doing the same thing: working.

So, do you work from home or from a place of business? It all boils down to the climate in which you'll be most successful, as well as the industry you're in. (Not to mention how lovely your home office is.)

With that said, let's look at some of the traditional telecommuting advantages!

Top 10 Advantages of Working from Home

  1. A timetable that is adaptable. You can take breaks whenever you want, don't feel obligated to hang up on family members when they call and eat lunch whenever you want.

  2. The environment created specifically for you. Set your noise level to whatever you want it to be, anywhere from dead silence to being in the front row of a Lady Gaga concert. You can also develop a better workflow rhythm if you pay attention to the ergonomics of your workspace.

  3. Clothes that are comfortable. You can wear your college sweatpants with the letters peeling off or the leggings your friends aren't aware you own. (And, hopefully, will never be.)

  4. It's more convenient to make phone calls. You won't have to worry about finding a meeting room or dealing with a chatty coworker. (Of course, having kids and pets at home can make this difficult for some remote workers.)

  5. Complete some weekend tasks. Isn't there a mountain of laundry waiting for you on Mt. Everest? That thing you set a reminder for 11 weeks ago to get from the store? It's. Crossed. Off the hook.

  6. There are no workplace distractions. Avoid coworkers discussing the merits of cryptocurrency, sirens blaring outside your window, and the air conditioning turning on as you conceal your icicle tears.

  7. There will be no commuting. Is it possible to get from bed to... bed? Hey, I'm not judging; it's a good gesture.

  8. Spend less money. If you work in a city or downtown, lunch is expensive. It's not unusual to see a $15 sandwich or a $4 cup of coffee in San Francisco. Going to the store and cooking meals at home will save you a lot of time.

  9. Forget about the crowds and the traffic. There will be no cramming yourself into a rickety public transportation tube, getting your new shoes scuffed, or walking behind agonizingly slow people who don't seem to understand what a straight line is. (Do I seem grumpy? No... I'm not bitter... )

  10. More time with family and friends. Take care of a sick loved one at home, get ready for your kids earlier in the day, squeeze in some extra snuggles with your dog, or simply enjoy some quiet time!

Top 10 Disadvantages of Working from Home

  1. Willpower is a powerful tool. I need to get started on this new project, but Netflix says there are four more episodes of Tiger King to watch...

  2. Having trouble sticking to a routine. The order in which you complete tasks at work is almost never the same as the order in which you complete tasks at home. Outside of the office, it can be difficult to mirror your timetable and procedures.

  3. Calls or pings that are important to you are being missed. My phone was set to do not disturb, and I was late for a meeting! Or maybe my boss sacked me and told me to concentrate on something else, and now it's 4:45 p.m...

  4. In any case, I'm calling UberEats. Didn't you think you were saving money? 'Blam!' The higher-rated Thai restaurant has a $20 minimum and a $5 fee. I should've remembered to get some bread…

  5. Naps with a purpose. This could potentially be advantageous... unless it lasts 45 minutes after your double entree Thai lunch is delivered.

  6. Boredom is a real thing. Those office meetings? Susan's cat stories are sorely missed, eh? How long do you think you can go without seeing another human being?

  7. Slowly working. The office can be energizing at times. Your house may not always work for you.

  8. There isn't a second monitor. How did I manage to work with two massive screens looming over me??? My 74 tabs are all necessary!

  9. WiFi is a pain. When the wifi goes crazy at home or in a cafe, you switch places a few times but honestly spend more time parking and ordering a 6-shot mint mojito coffee with coconut milk and 16 grains of sugar than working.

  10. I'm waiting for a response. You have a quick question to ask, but it will have an effect on how you do something for the next hour or even the rest of the day. And there hasn't been any reaction. (Insert "The Waiting" here.)

FOMO at Home. FOMO at Work.

On the other side, the grass is still greener.

Nothing sounds better than a warm day inside with your favorite blanket after a long day at work. You remember making jokes with your coworkers and wonder if the coffee machine made good coffee that day when you get home.

In any case, it's critical to choose the environment in which you'll be most successful. After all, everyone's experience with remote working is different, and they've discovered what works and what doesn't. A productivity booster for one person may be a distraction for another. Learning to focus in any environment becomes a valuable life skill as you work longer hours and gain more experience, and it will only benefit your professional career in the long run — especially as remote-first companies gain traction. If you're new to the remote workforce, start by figuring out where and why you do your best job.

To Thine Own Self Be True

Consider what environment allows you to stay focused the longest, how long it takes you to get back on track, and how you interact best. Working from home is the right option for you if you're self-motivated, follow a routine well, and enjoy minimal distractions.

Working from home is the way to go if you thrive on social interactions, are motivated by seeing others work, and stay on track best when others see you.

There are times when a project necessitates more quiet time, collaboration, or resource planning. It's crucial to be able to switch things up depending on how productive you think you'll be!
